Over here in our corner of Almost-But-Not-Quite-Perfect, we
supply hand lotion to our operators with dry skin to ensure
that ESD wrist straps make good contact. Only the lotion
that we supply is permitted in our shop (which is a periodic
struggle). The point, as I understand it, is to prevent
depositing silicones, which can be a bear to clean off.
Doug mentioned a couple of sources for these lotions. And
like Doug, we clean our assemblies right before conformal coat.

But we have one operator allergic to aloe vera, and every
ESD lotion I've seen has this stuff in it. Anybody know of an
aloe-free alternative?

Subject: Re: [TN] Hand Lotions vs. Hand Sanitizers

What purpose do the vitamins, aloe vera etc. serve? Almost certainly a
sales pitch. It is supposed to enhance contact with the wrist strap,
implying it is conductive and non-evaporative. Do you want to risk
conductive and non-evaporative chemicals transferred to critical
assemblies? The MSDS is particularly non-informative and I suspect the
product is mostly water plus a fragrance, a dye and some form of
surfactant. Probably a very expensive way of buying water.

Have you tried my thumbprint test?
