Students at our center have used a combination of plasma and laser to
extract RF devices successfully from molded packages for reuse in alternate
configurations. The method can equally be used for failure analysis. Paper
by one of them is included in the 2009 ECTC, "A Unique Application of
Decapsulation Combining Laser and Plasma," Jason Thomas, Jacob Baer, Philip
Westby, Kevin Mattson, Frederik Haring, Greg Strommen, John Jacobson, Syed
Sajid Ahmad, Aaron Reinholz; 2009 ECTC, May 25-30, 2009, San Diego, CA. This
paper has numerous useful references for additional investigation.

As for the wet etch, I am not sure what would work on GaAs. Nitric is chosen
to replace sulfuric which is slow and thus damaging to Al but I remember
that additives to the solution could passivate Al to allow decap of the
polymers. This was in the 80s.

Not sure of the AMOUNT, but it looks like decomposition of gallium
arsenide MAY lead to arsine production. Nasty stuff. It is the subject
of great debate (well among a very small group of people :) ) as a
contributing factor, if not the factor, to the death of Napoleon. One
theory is that in the moist environment of St Helens that microbes
decomposed the arsenic containing paint inside his house on the island
and produced arsine which lead to his death.

And, no, I am on in no way inferring that I should become unemployed by
favoring the elimination of gallium arsenide from use in
telecommunications.

One reference I found quickly, but have not actually read:

Arsine

Wayne,

Thanks for the info. I would not have guessed that!

Probably gives off some even nastier gases!!!

Nitric eats GaAs. Surprised me too, but I'm not a chemist either.

Inge,

Virtually all of my GaAs experience had airbridges, so they were all
hermetic packages.

The fuming nitric should go after the organics only, so it shouldn't
affect the GaAs, should it?

Maybe the chemists amongst us could say for sure.

Depending on what you want to see, don't forget how good today's
finefocus etc are. Can see even migration dendrites on a chip. Well, you
need a lot of manipulation and experience.

Fuming acids...have you done many back-etchings? Did it work for GaAs ?

Ingemar - Joyce,

My limited experience with the eximer for ablation was that even though
the laser removed the organics, I still [understandably] had to deal
with the inorganics left behind - such as silica with a PEMs device.

Whether I blew it off, or washed/rinsed it off, it broke up a
potentially nice process a great deal. This was back in the olden days.
To some extent, each pulse would dislodge some of the filler ... but not
enough.
Possibly provisions have been made for this by now.

Still, it is better than smelly-messy Decap, or the hazards of fuming
nitric...

Steve
