Inge,
Good questions, but I am not at liberty to give any more info. I got as
good a quality of answers as I could expect for the information I provided.
TechNet did its thing and is better than GuessNet, which is pretty funny.
You haven't lost your edge, Inge.

don't, Bev, you'll get into trouble! Can you describe the part a bit better?
How many? What vibration, harmonic sinus, random or what? What freq range,
what amplitude, what density? What application? Wouldn't try to give advice
without knowing what the object is. This is TechNet, not GuessNet.

Inge,
Although my parents dubbed me Beverley, I use Bev as it is easier to spell
and I get a few less letters addressed to:
Miss, Mrs or Ms. :)

Well the part in question is not stored in N2, and is to be soldered in air
with a Rol0 flux with a conventional lead free solder paste with a
conventional lead free profile (max 245C). I don't know the exact purity of
the nickel yet.

The resulting wetting angles are awful and this thing is supposed to see a
lot of vibration.

Beverly,

we solder to nickel daily. Watt do you want to know? There is nickel and
there is nickel. We avoid bright low P level nickel. There are two nickel
types that work pretty good, the one is a 7%P sulfamate and the other is
electroless half matte. Immediately after the nickel plating, the parts are
put in nitrogen boxes. Soldering is done with ordinary tin/lead solder with
a in-line vapour phase machine, with a VP batch machine or simply with
soldering irons. Flux is RMA. If the nickel is old, we may need RM or a few
seconds exposure to more aggressive fluxes. We have been soldering to nickel
for decades without any serious issues. Conveyour ovens or other IR ovens
don't work very good. We have very stringent requirements on these solder
joint, have to pass helium fine leakage tests.

Technetters,
Have any of you had any experience with trying to solder tin-based solders
to uncoated nickel? What kind of flux did you use? Do you know if the
joints had long term reliability, not just appearing to be "strong" joints
right after formation? What about negative wetting angles causing possible
stress concentration points?
