There's also Shadow Moire Interferometry.

You can accurately measure warpage of a plane at temperature with that method. SUNY-Binghamton offers it as a lab service, or did a year or so ago.

Seems that if the metal on the connector wets readily then your problem is obviously separation while the solder is molten. Board warp or connector warp.

I have imagined a profilometer system capable of gauging this kind of problem. Very difficult to get surface profiles to the required accuracy while the part could be as hot as 260C.

I guess if your board didn't change but the connector did then the presumption would be that the new connector warps when you get it hot. Maybe you can actually see this with your eyes using an oven with a window.

Ioan,

I posted a very similar issue earlier this week, actually. In our case the pins seem to lift at the end, however. The connector body is relatively flat and we have even seen some connectors being bowed off the reel. We have seen a change to the behavior of this connector. It used to behave fine.

Our hero Werner pointed out that the connector material LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer) has an infamous tendency to bow and twist. In my discussions with the vendor they revealed that there is a new part where they have implemented some sort of stiffener function. I have not received this sample yet so I can not tell you how. We are also adjusting the stencil to increase the amount of solder. We were also hand placing this part. This contributes to alignment issues. we will also rectify.

We are not out of the woods on this one so I am just offering this as guidance what to try. Have fun!

When I looked at the connector closely, I realized that the leads are on the same plane as the connector body, and both sit flush with the board. I think that when the plastic expands as the board goes thru reflow, it lifts the leads off the pads and causes opens. We started using a weight on top of the connector body to hold it down, and it has reduced the instances of defects, but have not eliminated it. I have a lodged a complaint with the manufacturer that they are looking into.

Since the part has 2 guiding pins, I thought the thermal expansion would make the pins rub on the hole walls and lift the part, so I had one pin cut. This does not seem to work and anyways, the lifted pins are in the middle.
