Thanks, Inge, this was kinda fun!

40,000 real / 11,881,376 possible (26 ^ 5) = approx. 1 out of 3,000
chance(rounded to nearest MSDs)

http://www.fluther.com/disc/7882/how-many-possible-combinations-of-5-letters
/

However, there really are 8193 common words in English

List on http://www.math.utoronto.ca/jjchew/scrabble/lists/common-5.html
loaded into Excel for a head count. (11 columns X 745 lines - 2 empty)

Therefore,8193 / 11,881,376 is approx. 1 out of 11,000 (rounded to nearest
MSDs)

No calculators were harmed or used, only Google and Excel! I'm really not a
brainiac, just a very good researcher thanks to attending Catholic school
when I was young.

Ed, too easy? hm...this one then on less than one minute (calculator
allowed). If you do that, you are not a scientific but an engineer.

1. How many 5 letter words (letter combinations) can be created with the
English alphabet?

2. The English language has 40,000 words with 5 letters. From the result in
1 above,
what is the probability of creating real word.s?

This is for Ed

Inge

PS. If this is also too easy, I've another funny one.
