I know Joyce I am looking at it - those "tight" designs my engineering team
keep throwing at me may lead to the point where I have to use it.

John, the coating is not patented. It is trade secret. You can use regular
wire ball bonder to bond 30 micron or less with multi tire die stack in high
speed. You can form a ball without residue form the ball bond and no
coating flake off or evaporation residue on gold pad. Not a simple "wax"
;-) to me.

Interesting......... they got a patent on insulating solid core conductor
wire????????? Someone should go patent the butt to make sure they never sit
down again at the patents office.

Inge,
Nope I haven't. But, Joyce, who is at ECTC right now, may be able to
shed some light on this from her time at Microbonds, where their main
patent deals with putting a coating on gold bond wires that allows them
to touch without shorting out.
On a shiny surface like that you MIGHT be able to determine
presence/absence by FTIR, but maybe not because of the thin nature of
the film. Certainly we have not been able to confirm the presence of
material in water spots on gold surfaces.
Two techniques that come to mine to try and Auger and/or XPS, but I am
not even a novice in either technique. Both are very expensive.

Bev

Hi all and even Bev,
Assume that you polish a metal, in my case five 9s Ag. Polishes have at
least two purposes. Grind the metal to get a certain level of brightness
(we
polish to Ra 30 nanometers). And leave a thin coating that protects the
metal. Now, in our case, what is left is so thin, that you can't observe
the
'coating'. Presumably because it's an organic compound of some sort,
and
also because it's transparent for our eye's wavelength. Now comes the
question: has anyone out there ever investigated such a 'wax' and
determined the thickness, and if so, what kind of equipment was used?
That's why I more or less directed the q to Bev...
Inge
