I agree in most cases fabricators reduce heat @ lamination so they don't
affect surface finishes. Voids should be acceptable when dealing with FR4
type stiffeners and keep the peel strength.

Subject: IPC 6013B

Good Afternoon,

I have been reading the new release of IPC 6103B and have some
questions/concerns surrounding Section 3.3.2.13 Stiffener Bonding. Under
6013A a stiffener was treated as a mechanical support only and voids were
allowed. So if one was using a PSA or a thermo set adhesive , in my opinion
there was rarely an issue. Under 6013B in my opinion the stiffener paragraph
has become very onerous with the supplier having to sign up to not only void
sizes but also % of voids.

If for example a supplier was building a 4-6 layer flex with a solid metal
stiffener underneath how would you ever prove you meet this paragraph
consistently? I see the same issues on thick FR-4 stiffeners.

I would appreciate hearing back from someone on the committee of what was
the rationale behind this new requirement.

Regards Steve Kelly
