We had five roll to roll double sided flex lines in the AT&T facility in
Richmond. We exited the flex business in the early eighties. The new designs
coming out of AT&T no longer were compatible with flex. The roll to roll
concept can be profitably used on high volume low technology product. For
higher technology product you experience problems printing and plating not
to mention distorting the material. In most cases, a panel flex line will
have an economic advantage. Roll to roll flex will quickly produce one of
two results a lot of product or a lot of scrap.

I was out at APEX last week and I saw the Roll to Roll stuff from a
company
in the UK. I brought back a sample, see below. I was looking for 1 x 36
inch
PCBs once, this would do it.
The basic inkjet head which drives the process is a 70um head so keep
that
in mind when designing track and space rules. Use increments of the basic
head.
Platting is thin, 30mOhm sheet resistance. . A 1 foot 10mil trace is 36
ohms.
Also, the process is VERY compatible with short runs and prototypes.

R-T-R processing is fast becoming one of the leading electronics
processes. PEN, Polyester, and Polyimide flex circuitry, even some
rigid-flex circuitry is being processed in a roll that runs continuously
through the production line. It requires special techniques and
knowledge, but provides tremendous cost-cutting advantages from a
process standpoint. Nearly all RFID and embedded chip-in-flex processes
utilize RTR processing.
