HI all.
Been off line in Moscow for a week.
Interesting thread, just to round off:
I suggest house rules:
1) Never put anything volatile in a solder pot, doesn't matter if it
contains solder or not or whether it is hot or not.
2) Apart from solder, never put anything in the pot unless the manufacturer
specifically states it can be put in - and then carefully.

There is a lot of heat energy in a large pot of solder and it will transfer
very efficiently into anything you put in it. In the case of organics it
will volatilise / burn them, generating large amounts of fume.
A very rapid generation of fume is called.... "explosion".

Keep in mind that solder paste is only 90/10 solder/flux by weight. By
volume it is 50/50. That's why it's messy.

Steve: Yes the 50% non solder portion of paste is more than just flux, there
are the viscosity package, diluents , solvents etc. It doesn't really matter
though as these will either go up in smoke or become part of the mess on the
pot same as the flux.

Li Yi: Solder paste has relatively less value, weight for weight, than used
bar solder or drosses. For all the reasons discussed it's difficult to
recycle so the extra costs are deducted from the metal value giving a lower
net, not forgetting that it's only ~90% metal to start with.

Regards

Mike

Suppose Kenny have the paste reflowed in the oven, and a stick like "solder
paste" is added to the wave pot, does that work?

To Kenny
The solder paste is so much more expensive than the solder bars, the better
choice maybe have your paste supplier recycled your outdated paste. More
money get back if lucky enough :)

Let me add this. Don't ever put anything in a wave solder pot except
small cut-up chunks of bar solder, solid core wire solder (fluxless),
very small amounts of tin or lead to bring the alloy within
specifications, and anti-oxidant powder, if used.
And you shouldn't do that without all of the necessary PPE, including
full-body leather apron, leather gloves, protective head covering with
face shield, and shoe covers. It's also a good idea to wear a face mask
to prevent lead dust from being inhaled.

NO! Don't ever do that. Not only will it not completely burn off, but it
can explode and the flux will also catch on fire on top of the solder in
the pot. This starts a chimney fire in the chamber and the exhaust stack
above it that cannot be extinguished without a special extinguisher
system that resides inside the stack. The stack is typically lined with
flux residues that are extremely difficult if not impossible to
extinguish.

That is why any equipment containing a large amount of molten solder
must have the exhaust blower hard-wired to the solder sump heater
switch. If the pot gets up to 500 deg. F. without any exhaust, the heat
will start a chimney fire. The exhaust has to be sufficient to prevent
that from happening.

Most localities are fully aware of this and make it part of the building
code requirements. It is also standard boilerplate language in any wave
solder machine maintenance manual.

And no, it never happened to me. I saw it happen at a CEM where I was
working as a consultant many years ago. The entire building burned down,
and about 85 people lost their jobs.

Hi Kenny,

It will make a heck of a mess. The flux in the paste will not
completely burn off and leave a tar like substance on top of the solder.

I have what I hope is a generic question without getting into too many
details.

IF the flux in the solder paste and the flux in the wave solder are
compatible and they are both 63/37, can unused, expired shelf life,
solder paste be dumped into the wave solder pot?

Thanks,

KennyB
