Yes, you probably can. By means of a microscopic sample, it ought to be 
possible to see in a SEM. When the steel wheels pass, nanosized friction

weldings are created. When the last wheel pass, these tiny weldings are 
broken. The way the fractures look will tell in what direction the wheel

moved. But it's a bit of expensive way. A timetable is cheaper.
