Roger,

NASA reports they are being called in as much these days on zinc whiskers issues, as on tin whiskers.? The structural steel for raised computer room floors seems to be the most common culprit.? Why is that a problem?? Zinc whiskers get broken off into the recirculated air flow used for cooling the big servers.? They re-deposit conductive filaments onto operating circuit boards, and poof !!? - you've blown some bits of information due to the short.? Maybe you can't even figure out where the transient voltage spike came from .? Dig further into the NASA web site.?

Not nearly as much work has been done on causes of whiskers?with zinc over steel, compared to tin over copper.? I don't know which zinc electrolyte platings are the worst.

Dave,

I've been around plating a lot, especially zinc and I never heard of zinc
whisker formation. Are you sure you don't mean tin whisker formation?

If you really do mean zinc please direct me to some information about it.
It's never too late in life to learn something new.

Sincerely,

Roger Mouton
