Hi Gary

There are some used CF8 and CF9 out there for sale for your axial and radial needs. The question is what dies come with the machine. The axials are easy as they have the cut and the bend width adjustments.

The Streckfuss requires the plate that contains a set of hole patterns, metric or Amercan Std and the thickness establishes the lead length.  You can choose a custom plate with more rows or identical patterns if you want to cut several components at the same time.

For thick boards 3 you may need a thicker plate to provide the longer leads.

Depending on your volume you can also lok at Amistar equipment: Model 750 for Ic's and others for axial.

The Amistar is apneumatic inserter where the operator holds the board over the insertion head. The machine will insert, cut and clinch the leads.

For really high volume of IC's, Infrared Technolgy Laconia NH, has just received one rebuild Universal Uni-mod. With this type of equipment the X/Y table and program inserts the .300 center IC's. The operator feeds the boards and keeps loading the tubes of IC's much like an SMT placement machine.

Ioan,

We have GPD, Hepco, and Heller, but I think Heller sold their lead forming years ago.  All have served well.

Hi Ioan!

The other players out there that I know of are Hepco:

http://www.hepcoblue.com/Documents/1800-1.pdf

and Streckfuss:

http://www.streckfuss.com/lead_form.html

You'll need two machines, one for radial parts and one for axial parts, there isn't anything out there that I know of that will do both. I don't think that Hepco makes anything that does lock-in forms for axial parts. The only comment I have about Streckfuss machines is that sometimes your average operator has a hard time setting things up properly. Not that it's overly difficult, but the set-up is not fool-proof. They do need to understand the machine.

As far as being reliable, they all are. We have both Hepco and GPD machines here. The Hepco machines are fairly new, but they're DIP forming and cutting machines though. Our radial and axial machines are all GPD and they must be at least 10-15 years old and they still are working fine. The only problem we've run across is that sometimes the cutters become magnetized and with certain parts that presents a problem. The machine will jam up. It doesn't happen that often, but when it does we have to cut and form the parts by hand.

Dear Technos,

I need your input on lock-in forming, you know - making those kinks that lock the radial or axial components in the holes when manually inserted, to keep them from being pushed up in the wave.

Is this type of forming reliable? Other than GPD, what other players are in the game and what your experiences are?

Off-line answers are welcome, should you consider the details too "intimate" to show on Technet.

Thanks,
