Hi Peter!

What kind of straddle mount connector are you thinking about? If it's for a
PCMCIA or PC card, there's a company that makes straddle mount connectors
with solid solder deposits on each lead that you can slide on the boards
without worrying about smearing solder paste, and then you reflow them along
with the rest of the board. Teka's connectors with solid solder deposits
work great, I've used them numerous times in the past. Go to:

and check out this shockwave animation:

Subject: [TN] Straddle mount connector at SMT

Hello Technet,

I would like to ask for input on processing edge mount (straddle mount)
connector at SMT,

1. What is the best process to assemble a straddle mount (edge
mount) connector on the SMT line? Since the connector has to be installed
manually prior to reflow, how can I avoid paste smearing between the
connector leads and the SMT pad? The particular connector manufacturer in
my case recommendeded a partial solder paste deposition on the pad and rely
on solder wicking to complete a solder fillet. How reliable would such
process
be?

2. What are the defects and problems related to the straddle mount
connector assembly?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Peter
