Betreff: Re: [TN] Friday NTC question: is Vinyl really vinyl

Craig,
Sorry for the late answer I have been traveling.

The first records were made of a lacquer acetate plasticized with castor oil.
The next materials used were:
Shellac
Bakelite
Vinsol
Valtie
Vinyl chloride acetate

33-1/3 LP and 45rpm Record Material:
Vinyl records (33-1/3 LP and 45rpm) are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Information on record material types was taken in part from 'The Care and Handling of Recorded Sound Materials' by Gilles St-Laurent Music Division of the National Library of Canada, January 1996.

Vinyl chloride is a gas. PVC is a rigid solid and needs plasticizers to make it less so. In the case of cable sheathing a lot of plasticizer is needed and in many cases those plasticizers are the three phthalates on the REACH SVHC list!

Subject: [TN] Friday NTC question: is Vinyl really vinyl

Hi techxperts,
My mind got to wandering again, so here goes:

The contemporary term for what we called "records" (LP's and 45's) is "vinyl".
But to me something that is vinyl would be a lot less rigid.

So, just what kind of material are records/"vinyl" made of?

Thanks in advance.
