Louis,

What class clean room are you working in?

In a prior life within a satellite manufacturer's board assembly shop, I
worked in a Class 10,000 clean room in a PWB assembly facility. Booties
were not worn, but we used tacky sheets and shoe cleaners to remove any
debris from shoes. ESD smocks were worn and controlled as well.

In the same plant, in the Integration and Test (I&T) areas where
satellites were built in a Class 10,000 clean room, booties were worn
over shoes. "Bunny" suits, face masks, and head covering was used as
well. The logic was that in the I&T areas, the operators worked inside
the satellite during assembly, hence the higher protective gear.

Which leads me to another question: How well is your clean room
supported? We had folks scrub the floors on a daily (sometimes by shift)
basis. Even if your people wear all the protective gear, if particle
counts, room cleanliness, and temperature & humidity monitoring and
control is not adhered to, the product would not be protected.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Subject: [TN] footgear for clean room

TechNetters, anyone have advice about what to wear on the feet in PCB
manufacturing clean room? We've tried various booties which seem to
disintegrate and clog filters. Tyvek booties may be good, but there have
been complaints they are slippery. Thanks for any comments. Louis
