Very good advice. It may sometimes take several months to fully qualify
a new flux or solder. Thanks, Mike.

Subject: RE: [TN] ROL1 RUMOR

Some companies are indeed rationalising their product ranges to
concentrate on core products/follow 80/20 rules and so on according to
their business models. For sure MIL spec and other legacy fluxes will be
on the 'wrong'
side of such cuts.

Other companies use different models and supply products on a to-order
basis for as long as there is a need. There are a couple of cautions:
- When such products leave mainstream lines there is likely to be a
commensurate cost increase.
- Users should also keep in mind that some products are so old that
ingredients may (soon) be no longer available due to similar
obsolescence at supplier's suppliers or current H&S or environmental
constraints.

The best advice for anyone using these products is to be prepared and
actively qualify alternate supplies BEFORE your purchasing office finds
products have been withdrawn.

Subject: Re: [TN] ROL1 RUMOR

I heard from both our Kester and Alpha reps that there was a consensus
to drop RMA flux materials due to the fact that so few companies use
this formulation anymore. The ROL0 and ROL1 fluxes are more difficult to
clean, solvents are required and are expensive, water soluble fluxes are
much easier to completely remove, and at the same time all of the
commercial side of the industry has typically gone to no-clean flux
formulations. So some of the solder paste, flux, and wire vendors are
taking a long hard look at continuing to make these products to a
dwindling customer base.

Heard a rumor from one of my colleagues that ROL1 solder flux would no
longer be manufactured.

I find this extremely hard to believe. Has anyone heard this rumor?

Just curious.

Thanks.
