I think PVC is fine for keeping the phonograph needle in the groove, and the vinyl in "records" flows well enough to mold (mass produce) many thousands of copies from a nickel electroformed master.? But, I think consistent "data spot" location for CD music requires polycarbonate resin.? Some 20 years ago, I saw some of the early CD injection molding machines at the old "Columbia Records" facility (Sony).? VERY interesting seeing 20 ton injection molding machines running in a clean room atmosphere, and filtering heated, liquid resin down to few microns in filter packs. Wonder if that industry is still the same? Then again, I should have dialed Wikipedia instead of TechNet-pedia.?

Craig:
Kenny is right, the vinyl records are polyvinylchloride (PVC).?? The flexible
stuff you are used to thinking of as "vinyl" is PVC, LOADED with plasticizers.?
These plasticizers can, over the years, evaporate, which is why you need to
regularly clean the haze off the inside of car windows, and after a few years
your car upholstery begins to crack.

Hi techxperts,
My mind got to wandering again, so here goes:

The contemporary term for what we called "records" (LP's and
45's) is
"vinyl".
But to me something that is vinyl would be a lot less rigid.

So, just what kind of material are records/"vinyl" made of?

Thanks in advance.
