Craig:
Kenny is right, the vinyl records are polyvinylchloride (PVC).   The flexible stuff you are used to thinking of as "vinyl" is PVC, LOADED with plasticizers.  These plasticizers can, over the years, evaporate, which is why you need to regularly clean the haze off the inside of car windows, and after a few years your car upholstery begins to crack.

Subject: [TN] Friday NTC question: is Vinyl really vinyl

Hi techxperts,
My mind got to wandering again, so here goes:

The contemporary term for what we called "records" (LP's and
45's) is
"vinyl".
But to me something that is vinyl would be a lot less rigid.

So, just what kind of material are records/"vinyl" made of?

Thanks in advance.
