Louis,

I presume you have a "printed circuit cleanroom", rather than a "semiconductor cleanroom".? By that, I mean that nearly all PWB cleanrooms have the air return at the baseboard, rather than a raised, perforated floor.?? The key here is that the air return makes a lot of difference in footwear.? In good cleanrooms with a perforated floor, the air return is below the level of the operators feet, and the footwear answer is "who cares"?? Laminar air flow means that the shoes are some 3 feet below any active clean object - board or box of wafers.? Years ago, I questioned a semiconductor shop that allowed their operators to wear Nikes.? Their reply was - we have faith in our laminar flow and clean room, and the particles do not recirculate up to work objects.?

That said, nearly all PWB clean rooms I have seen have laminar flow only where the air leaves the HEPA filters in the ceiling.? In my opinion, many PWB clean rooms only cause the operators to "think clean", but really that is a good start.? Do you measure particle counts in your clean room on both an "at rest" and an "in operation" mode?

I suggest you contact a local hospital supply and see if you can get what local surgeons are using in the OR.? Follow their suggestions on laundry and change-out of booties.? I think the PWB industry can learn a lot about "clean" from other related industries.

Subject: [TN] footgear for clean room

TechNetters, anyone have advice about what to wear on the feet in PCB
manufacturing clean room? We've tried various booties which seem to disintegrate
and clog filters. Tyvek booties may be good, but there have been complaints they
are slippery. Thanks for any comments. Louis
