The "E" number is the UL file number that is assigned to a manufacturer. The file contains all the "Recognized" or "Listed" components from that manufacturer that have been tested by UL and found to comply with whatever standard is used to qualify components under in a specific "category". A "Category" is a specific range of products (Example: category "ZPMV2" is for printed circuit board manufacturers). There are numerous categories and subcategories (I have a 1/2" thick book of the category listings) that apply to various types of components.
Example: You can find which company built your PCBs by looking at the E file number on the PCBs you buy (if they put the E file number on them), then going to the UL on-line certification search function, typing in the "E" file number and submitting the request.
There used to be (I believe you can still get) a set of "Yellow Books" (hardcopy) of all the recognized component categories and the manufacturers and recognized products under each category. Yes, they were huge - and I'm sure they haven't shrunk in size since I had copies about 10 years ago. The on-line cert directory is the best way to go now.
Each manufacturer who has a recognized product must have some identifying logo also on the product or on the packaging for the product. Unfortunately, there is no way to scan in a logo and do a search on it at this time. That's why we always specify that any PCB we buy MUST have an E file number on it somewhere. These days you may buy boards from a board broker, so you don't have a clue which shop built them. The E file nails that down nicely...

I just spent hours poring over their trademark pages, trying to idetify a logo with no "E" number. I tried narrowing it down by the apparent S and Z in the logo - down to the few hundred Shenzhen shops....what fun!
We have a production line in Germany stopped by a UL inspector right now, because this anonymous Chinese board shop didn't use a proper UL logo, and no one seems to know where the boards came from. Maybe they just "copied"
the logo wrong?
