Bob is right. There are ways to keep cost down but keep also in mind that you need only learn one important new concept to pay for everything and provide ongoing benefit to your employer well into the future.

Some sage made the observation, some unknown time in the past, that: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance". and to that you can add the corollary? " What you don't know CAN hurt you"

Best wishes in your efforts
Joe

If I really want to go to a seminar or conference this is what I do.

...Tell them you will take your personal vacation time to go.

...Figure out the cheapest method to get there and back. Drive your own
vehicle or offer to not rent a vehicle and use public transportation.

...Find a cheap hotel that isn't in a too bad neighborhood. See
http://ca.rand.org/stats/community/detcrimerates.html or
http://www.donohueteam.com/Crime/
or something similar.

...Set a limit on expenses. You can eat fairly cheap if you can stay at
a place that has a fridge and microwave.

...Take a laptop and tell them you get any work required done while
you're away.

And here's the kicker: if they pay anything make them a promise that, if
you leave within a year of them footing the bill, tell them you'll pay
it back.

I've managed to get my CID+ and High-Speed Design classes at UCLA by
doing this. Usually if you show them how much you'll learn (and save
them money) they might go for it.

Best of luck.

Subject: [TN] Apex Expo

I am trying, for the 1st time, to convince my co. to send me. I have
never been. I feel there is value in going but it is difficult to
quantify.
There is resistance, primarily to the travel costs. There has to be some
clear benefit to going there, over top of local learning opportunities,
and I am being encouraged to look for classes at the local university
and tech schools to 'better myself', rather than looking to be sent to
Vegas.
Any help you can give me to quantify the benefits of Apex?Genny
