Jean-Francois,
You are welcome. You may also find the following narrative useful. I
wrote it as part of the revision of the IPC-HDBK-830, currently underway.

Relation of IPC-CC-830 and MIL-I-46058 to Performance Specifications

Many individuals do not understand the relationship or nature of
IPC-CC-830 or MIL-I-46058 to performance specifications, such as J-STD-001
or IPC-A-610.

IPC-CC-830 and MIL-I-46058 are both material qualification specifications.
The two documents are virtually identical. Both of these documents
specify a series of tests for conformal coating materials, on standard
substrates, with defined minimum acceptability criteria. The tests
specified in these documents are those chosen by the military and
high-performance segment of the electronics industry to examine the most
critical elements of conformal coatings.

Passing these tests are no guarantee that the conformal coating will work
in any given application and does not assure that the coating is ?good?.
Nor does it mean that not qualifying to this specification indicates that
the coating is ?bad?. These two specifications merely set a minimum set
of criteria for a coating to be considered for military or
high-performance application. The onus is, and has always been, on the
OEM to determine if a coating is adequate for the end item application for
the end use environment.

The proper use of these two standards is for material selection, not
material performance. Example: Conformal coating shall be qualified to
MIL-I-46058, Type AR.

It is left to performance standards, such J-STD-001, or to individual
customer requirements to define performance requirements for conformal
coating on electronic assemblies.

Jean-Francois,

IPC-CC-830 is a materials qualification document, not a application or
performance specification. It sets the minimum criteria for coatings to
be used in high performance electronics.

IPC-A-610 and IPC-J-STD-001 both have coating sections, but both defer to
the engineering drawing or print. Essentially, the coating goes where the
drawing says and coating does not go where the drawing specifies a keep
out zone. Required clearance depends on the drawing and the quality
system of the customer.

Hi Technetters,

Can anyone tell me if there is a spec on the coverage of conformal
coating, more precisely is there a required clearance on the edges of the
PCBs?
