Oh yes, explaining what you are doing to an auditor. Typically, you need to
have what you are doing documented in your ESD control plan.
This link includes: "On a similar note, I was once asked to show an engineer
in Florida why he should use static dissipative table covering instead of
old back issues of the Miami Herald. The Herald actually performed
marginally better than the special table covering - on that beautiful but
humid day."
Like concrete, paper is hydroscopic and readily absorbs moisture from the
air. It would be the water not the insulative paper that would provide a
path to ground.
Is this anyway to run a railroad? No.

Steve,
Check out this link
http://www.staticworx.com/articles/bare_concrete_anti-static_flooring.php .
From a quality stand point I wouldn't do it. At the least I would place a
dissipative epoxy coating on the floor in the areas you will be transferring
or handling material. It will also give his customers added insurance that
ESD is being addressed when or if he is audited.
Regards,
Ted

Dewey,
I think I understand your response, but the question still remains - is a
bare [untreated with anything] concrete floor [without mats to trip over]
able to minimize charge build-up?
His parts are crude, and pretty macroscopic by our standards. His objective
is crude, and he needs it low cost, but reasonably safe for people and
product. I know if one were to do it the way we normally would, I would
coat the floor, or put down ESD tiles and call it quits. He is on less than
a shoestring budget, trying to make do as best as he can.
The ESD people want to sell him mats and treatments that he can not afford.
Hence the question

Obvious is a treated concrete floor with an ESD safe coating. The
downside is maintenance and cleaning.
Large ESD mats may be better with dedicated ESD safe work areas.

Brian - Joyce,
This is HEAVY equipment [ie - dirty, filthy, grimy]. I have very little
concern about dirt and dust - just ESD suitability.
Any comments on suitability of the bare concrete floor to mitigate
charge
build-up and/or transfer?
