The minimum requirement for the start of the bend away from the
component body (or lead weld, if present) is one lead diameter. In
other words, the leads must exit the component body straight out a full
lead diameter before beginning the bend. However, that does not mean you
cannot use the part, as there are a number of options available.
1. Form the leads in a pigtail.
2. Orient the component axis vertical to the PWB. (Also called a hairpin
configuration). This may require a bend in the bottom lead to provide a
standoff so the component body does not plug the PTH or interfere with
formation of a good SJ.
3. Form the leads down and inwards. This does preclude any portion of
the body resting on the PWB which may or may not be a good thing in
terms of heat dissipation.

In any of the above configurations, you are still required to meet the
one lead diameter minimum between the body and the start of the bend.

Subject: [TN] axial lead bend

We are trying to put a larger axial part in a smaller through-hole
footprint.
The body of the NEW part is ALMOST as long as the hole spacing.

Is there any requirement for how much room is needed for lead bend?
(IPC-A-610 doesn't address this, unless I missed it)

thanks,
Jack
