Hey Jack
When we have to do that we will usually "pigtail" the lead so that there
is no worry of stressing it too close to the body.  Hard to describe,
the lead comes out the component for > the required distance, then bend
it up, through 270 degrees and back down.  The lead can be pretty much
adjacent to the component end if needed.  No worries about stress relief
or stress at the termination.

We are trying to put a larger axial part in a smaller through-hole
footprint.
The body of the NEW part is ALMOST as long as the hole spacing.

Is there any requirement for how much room is needed for lead bend?
(IPC-A-610 doesn't address this, unless I missed it)
