Hi Victor - I recommend going to the Leco Corporation website and
contact
them about getting a copy of their "Metallography Principles and
Procedures" booklet, form 200-860. Their booklet is considered by many
folks to be the "bible" for metallography. The booklet contains multiple

etchant recommendations for all elements and metal alloy families. You
could try Tucker's etch: HCl (conc) 45ml, HNO3 (conc) 15 ml, HF (48%)
15ml, H2O 25 ml.

[TN] Cold Forged Alunium (CFA), Cross section-grain structure

Fellow TechNetters;

Is there anyone out there with experience with CFA cross section and
chemical etchants to delineate grain boundary? Do not have the
specific CFA alloy.
I used the following chemical etchant:
No. 5 Keller's etch HF (conc) 1.0ml
                                                 HCL (conc) 1.5ml
                                                 HNO3 (conc) 2.5ml
                                                 H20
95.0ml

Immerse for 10-20 sec; wash in stream of warm water, Microstructure of
duraluminum type alloy. 17ST, AND ALCLAD

Not able to se grain boundary.

vic,
