Hi Leif!

I've used a PDR X-410 at my last employer, and we're currently looking
to replace the Pace TF2000 system we have with a PDR XT5P.

http://www.pdr-america.com/xt5p.htm

I really like the PDR focused IR. There's no nozzles, you can actually
see what's going on with the component while reworking it. Temperatures
of both the PCB and component are real-time, closed-loop, computer
controlled via non-contact thermocouples, and there hasn't been
situation that I have encountered that the system couldn't remove and
replace a component...and I have encountered some pretty demanding
stuff. If there's components adjacent to the one you are reworking, and
you don't want them to be subjected to the intense heat, you simply use
aluminum foil to reflect the IR light.

The lightbulbs that are used are off-the-shelf high intensity lightbulbs
that I can get locally (even here in Tulsa!)

There are components that do reflect the IR light, for example; metal
bodied Xilinx 1152-ball BGA's, but that problem is taken care of by
using a black thermal transfer tape on the top of the part that you buy
from PDR. Also, the tape can be used multiple times before it's adhesive
properties gives out and it becomes unusable.

Placement capabilities have gotten quite a bit better with the XT5P
system than what it was on the X-410. Smooth, precise, micrometers are
used for X,Y, and Z movement. Vision and alignment is a split-mirror
type of system that is used with many rework systems.

I can't really say anything bad about the system...

Now for the standard disclaimer; I don't work for PDR, have no
affiliation with them, nor do I get any kick-back from PDR. I've just
used their equipment and like it.

Steve

Subject: [TN] BGA Workstations

Technetters,

We are shopping for a anew and improved BGA workstation. First of all it
would be great if I could get some recommendations what you have
purchased recently and why. In addition, I was hoping someone could give
us some real world pro's and con's with respect to the focused IR type
of workstation.

Thank you!
