I assume you mean a hot-gas BGA rework station. The answer to your
question is (drum roll followed by Ka-ching!) it depends.
It depends on the following:
	1. What type of boards do you need to rework?
If you build lots of heavy backplanes, thick multilayer
assemblies with lots of internal copper planes, very large boards
(larger than 19" by 19", for example) and you do not need to put flip
chips or small CSPs on them, then look at a Summit 1100 with at least a
1500 watt bottom preheater.

	2. What type of components do you need to rework?
If you build primarily average or small .062"-.093" thick
multilayer assemblies and you need to rework standard BGAs and flip
chips, then the Metcal or OKi systems will work well for you, even if
these are built with lead free solder.

	3. If you build a wide range of boards, but not a lot of very
small flip chips or CSPs, then the AirVac DRS24 is the best all-around
machine. It can handle very small boards and all the way up to about a
16" by 16", .125" thick assembly with the double bottomside
preheater plates. The air flow is very well controlled so it can be used
for most flip chips and CSPs, but is not quite as good as the Metcal
or OKi systems for really small parts (.035" square or smaller).

I have used the IR rework stations, and found them to be OK is some
situations, but not very good in others. The issue is the different
component materials, even if they are the same color, quite often have
radically different rates of IR absorption, so you never know if it is
too hot or not hot enough. And if you cannot get enough convection heat
under the part, you might as well scrap the board. Also, the surrounding
board area heat varies all over the place. I have not had very good luck
with IR.

If you are looking for a machine primarily to do BGA reballing, use
laser.

Subject: [TN] BGA Workstations

Technetters,

We are shopping for a anew and improved BGA workstation. First of all it
would be great if I could get some recommendations what you have
purchased recently and why. In addition, I was hoping someone could give
us some real world pro's and con's with respect to the focused IR type
of workstation.

Thank you!
