The current company I work for works mostly with automotive LED lighting as
well as indoor and outdoor LED lighting. Large portions of the LED's we deal
with are three or four dollars a piece, so scrap is not something we take
lightly. What we have found useful is to have a special training program for
repair and cell operators. We focus on correct hand soldering, component
removal and solder joint repair of the LED's. During the hands on training
session we attach thermocouples to the dies and leads of the LED's and
attach them to a data logger. This helps train the operator on the correct
time and temperature needed to repair an assembly without damaging the LED
but still have an adequate solder joint. We also add the information to the
process sheets and lock the temperature adjustments. In one application we
plow air on the dome of the LED to keep the die from being damaged. Since
the implementation of the program our scrap rates have gone down
tremendously.
