Stseve's on to something:
"Of course, the unions and management need to share in the blame, but so
does the American consumer for not DEMANDING the US automakers
manufacture something with halfway decent mileage. "
The best selling vehicle of all time, the #1 seller in america for the past 17
years, is a FULL SIZE TRUCK. It's lost market share recently - to Nissan and
Toyota, who's trucks have gotten bigger every year to meet demand until
they are now also full size. It took gas going over $4/gal for the Honda
Accord (not a subcompact by any means) to boot it from the #1 spot.
They wouldn't build them if we didn't buy them.
And it's not just cars. While the CEO's of all of these companies are being
roasted, they only gave us what we wanted. They weren;t the ones buying
McMansions they couldn't afford, putting plasma TVs on overburdened VISA
cards, working two jobs with kids in constant daycare to facilitate that BMW
purchase.....
America is a CONSUMER driven economy, always has been.
