You know me too well. My hands were on the keyboard when your message
popped up. I have been traveling on business for three weeks and didn't
want to lose the touch.

Well, Cu can be very ductle, but whether necking wil occur or not
depends on a lot of things. In case of barrel cracks it can become even
more complicated as the quality of plating can make it look as necking.

Vladimir

Oh yes I find the copper is plastically deformed and it appears that is
happening here. Look for a thinning right at the break site. With fast
onset catastrophic type failures thinning is frequently observed. Copper
thinning is s very subtle condition however and is usually over looked.

You know there is a lot more to be said about barrel cracks, crack
propagation, roots causes etc. and not enough time to do so in this
forum. I just try to hit the major points.

Sincerely,

Hi Paul,
Inward bowing of the barrel walls certainly occurs. However, in order to
cause cracks like these, the copper would have to plastically deform and
stay bowed. I did not see this.
