Hi Ido,
Quite frankly, what your pics show I have never seen before--this sure is
the weirdest ever. Barrel cracks typically start on the resin-side of the
barrel because of the way the barrel is loaded. This almost looks like some form
of chemical attack.

Hi Ido,

I cannot view the http site to which you have linked.

I get the following message:

"Free users cannot publish folders, files or web pages. Folders published by
free users are for preview only; they will expire in 20 minutes.

It is a DriveHQ standard policy to only allow "trusted" users to publish.
This is to prevent "bad" users from pu
blishing inappropriate contents. Free
users are not considered trusted. A free user can upgrade to True User or
Premium (Paid) User. To become a True user, you must register your account
with a private domain company email address, or deposit at least $3 into
your DriveHQ account."

I guess your 20 minutes are up and the picture are removed.

Usually we ask Steve Gregory to post TechNet pics on his site
stevezeva.homestead.com. Can you send the pictures to Steve
([log in to unmask]) and ask him to post the pictures on his site
so we can all view them?

Lead/free 260°C assembly produces a different type of barrel and corner
crack than tin/lead 230°C. A 288°C float may be showing these somewhat
unique failure modes.

Change in crack morphology may be a results of Cu bath contamination,
brightener and chemistry maintenance, electrical properties (RMS ripple,
racking, bussing, pulse etc) but material may also play a role in lead/free
applications. Grid size is another variable that is expressing different
failure modes in lead/free applications.

If I can view the 288°C induced corner and barrel cracks I will gladly
comment on them.

Sincerely,

Paul Reid

Subject: [TN] Barrel and Corner cracks in copper elctroplating

Hello technet

We are suffering a serious problem of barrel and corner cracks in the
pattern copper plate bath.
Please look at the following pic. (all after 288C solder thermal stress)

http://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx/shareID4765976/fileID233954134/eo-d3497-

This very strange phenomenon occurs only in the second copper, and does not
occur in the panel plated copper.

After testing all bath components, they seem to be ok. CVS is oK, hull cell
is OK. It seems the copper lost its mechanical properties.

We are looking for possible contamination and changed the bath for a new
fresh bath, and it happens again after a few days..

Does somebody have some idea why this cracks can occur? What other
reasons..?

Thanks.
