Thanks guys, good info.

The problem we're having is occasionally we have to use 2mm pitch QFN
parts and some small BGAs for test and proto.

When we go to all the CM around here they can't just squeeze us in.

The company is doing well and we're told that if we need something to
speed us to market, get it. We thought it might be useful to have a
small oven.

I tried eBay (of course!) and I'll look into the companies mentioned.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I have to say I don't post much here, but I sure as heck read every
post, you betcha.

Amazing what I've learned! Sure is a ton of stuff that most design side
folks don't have a clue about. Including me.

Bob, Kevin makes an excellent point about working with a good local
contract manufacturer. We've been using a method for some years that
has worked very well with two local CM's we deal with. We only build
our prototype boards in house as 100% of our production is done at CM's
domestic and offshore. We'll define the parts like BGA's and QFN's that
we know are difficult or impossible to solder in our lab, then consign a
small number of prototype boards over to the CM. While we're having the
boards fabricated, we ask our CM to get a stencil made. When we receive
the boards, we deliver them and the parts we want assembled to them.
They stencil the board, place the parts manually, then reflow them. We
take the boards back and finish the build by hand in our lab. The
advantage is that there's no impact to the production line and we can
quickly get our prototypes in the hands of engineers and software
developers. We've used both full and partial stencils for this
practice.

Hi Bob,

Yours is not a simple solution, many questions come to mind. If you are
truly on the design side, and building assemblies is not your focus, why
invest capital in equipment you will seldom use? You don't mention the
actual pitch of the "PITA" component, but consider that of the SMT
process, reflow is only 1/3 of the simplest solution. How will you
apply paste and place the part(s)? The solder paste screening and
placement of fine pitch components can be just as, if not more,
challenging than the reflow process.
You may be best served to locate and work with a good contract
manufacturer who is willing to work with you. Most are more than
willing to work with you from concept through prototype and production.
This is a win-win scenario, as a good contract mfr can provide valuable
DFM inputs and save you from design errors or needless capital
investment.

That being said, it is difficult to recommend a system for you without
knowing your parameters. I can provide a short list of some oven
manufacturers who may make budget-conscious systems that you are
seeking:

- APS / Novastar
- Essemtec
- Manncorp

Be sure to also check out the used market.

Good luck.

Kevin

Subject: [TN] IR reflow oven

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a decent, small IR reflow oven, maybe in the
$1000-$2000 dollar range?

We're on the design side and trying to do these fine pitch parts in R&D
is a PITA.

Thanks!
