It was a fairly common process in the 70's and 80's.
Gold was electroplated over nickel on the edge fingers. Too thick for solder
and expensive. So, the copper was protected with a dip in solder. The Gold
fingers were protected with some kind of temporary solder mask, depending on
the sophistication of the supplier.

Less common was selective gold on the interior of the board. But, this was
done as well. The application I recall was a digital encoder. Gold over
nickel gave acceptable life but was too thick for soldering. This was
expensive.

I am confused.

i have some chart which shows block of gold plating then HASL/HAL.

i am trying to understand if it is by mistake showing HASL after Gold
Plating ?

or some Fabricator actually using HASL/HAL Process after Gold plating
Process ? if yes why did they required to do that ?

Thanks

Anand
