While the EU's new chemicals policy, Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is extremely broad, there are a few key elements that the electronics supply chain must address immediately, and others that require preparation.

Update on RoHS Worldwide

The European Commission is currently reviewing the EU RoHS directive and will submit proposals to amend the directive by the end of 2008. These changes will have a significant impact on the electronics industry with some new substance restrictions likely and the scope being broadened. A review of exemptions is also underway and changes could be adopted as early as 2009.  Several US states and other countries are considering RoHS-type legislation of varying similarity to Eu-RoHS.



Emerging Eco-Design Regulations Affecting the Electrical Products Sector

The Eco-design Directive (2005/32/EC) has been in effect since August 2005 but it is not until now that its impact on the energy using products sector is starting to become clear. About 20 product groups have been under scrutiny affecting high energy in use and high volume products principally in the consumer, domestic and office products and infrastructure sectors. Regulations or other measures are now being firmed up for these products with more products in the professional and industrial sectors beginning to be considered under a second wave of studies.
