The UltraCAD PCBTEMP utility is OK for steady state current. I believe
its based on IPC-2221A chart on page 41 (May 2003 version).

But what if a 30 amp trace takes a surge of approx. 100 amp for some
known time such as 5 or 30 secs. How can you find a good
approximation of what trace width/gauge to use?

I now have such a requirement to meet & never had to deal with
surges of such long duration.

Adding dynamics to a current spike by being able to vary the spike
height and the duration also would be helpful.

Any thoughts on where I can find a chart/calculator which can give me
some approximation?

Thanks
TDK
