In response to this string, I just wanted to say that I took the
7711/7721 certification class at STI in Madison, Alabama the week before
last. While I have been through IPC certification for a number of
different standards, I can only say that my experience at STI was
certainly the best. The instructor, Tom Borman, was by far the best
instructor I have ever had for an IPC cert or re-cert, or for any class
for that matter. He was very knowledgeable and very patient in answering
our many questions, but above all else he really went out of his way to
make sure we understood what we needed to know.

And I take back my ignorant comments about going to a hot, humid,
mosquito-infested location. I found Madison to be a beautiful area, and
the Madison townsfolk to be some of the most friendly and accomodating
people I have ever met. I would certainly recommend STI to anyone
considering being certified. You may also wish to visit Huntsville
nearby, a small suburb attached to Madison. ;-)

As far as having an IPC 7711/7721-certified trainer in your plant, it is
absolutely worthwhile. Being certified in this training and passing it
on to your rework/repair people will ensure your customers that you are
training them in the best possible methods and practices, that they will
all be performing the same rework/repair methods (there is certainly a
lot to be said for consistency in rework and repair!) and they will all
be using methods qualified by the IPC.

The cost is easily recovered by prevention of improper rework/repair
methods leading to scrap or field failures in the first year. At risk of
sounding like a salesman for IPC and/or STI, I strongly recommend it for
anyone wishing to gain world-class status in terms of rework/repair,
because it also reinforces your knowledge of IPC-610 and J-STD-001.

How can you perform proper rework/repair if you don't fully understand
the general workmanship requirements in the first place?

I know there are those of you out there that are resistant to performing
repairs, but I believe all of the methods listed in IPC 7711/7721, if
done properly, will actually make the repaired CCA assembly more
reliable, not less. It is well worthwhile to have that training to
perform the repairs and rework and avoid the cost of the scrap. And
remember the cost of the scrap is not the material cost of the CCA being
scrapped, it is that plus the cost of the time it takes for the buyer to
re-order replacement parts and boards, the re-rcvng inspection, the
re-stocking, the re-assembly, re-inspection, the impact of slipping ship
schedules, etc....

Get certified.

Hi Karen!

I think it's worthwhile. I think the most important thing that's taught
is that one needs to really think and analyze what the objective is when
reworking or repairing anything. The training details out three levels
of conformance, and then it's up to (in my case, our customers) whether
or not they want to accept the rework or repair of the product we build
for them. It's not just a "make it look like it used to" type of deal,
you need to deeper than just cosmetic appearances.

The training goes through and gives you "hands-on" experience with the
basic rework and repair methods which is a good foundation to build on
as one does more and more rework and repairs.

BTW, I really liked my class! Couldn't have been in a more scenic area,
only wish I had more time to explore!

Separate topic, how was the IPC 7711/7721 training class? Worthwhile?
We have been considering it....

Hi Genny!

Sorry it's taken me a bit to get your picture posted, but I just got
back from 2-weeks vacation and a week in Colorado going to a
IPC-771/7721 instructor certification class, so I've been catching up on
things this morning. But here is your picture:

Myself, I wouldn't worry about them tiny solderballs. They probably
aren't going anywhere, and besides if they did, they're so small what
problem could it cause?

Have you ever gotten a much better analytical tool available to you, and
have it cause major panic due to what you can see now that you never saw
before?
We got a major fancy dancy brand new X-Ray.
Now we see things like the attached picture. Steve, could I trouble you
to post it for me?
 <<solderballs-QFN.jpg>>
Our old X-Ray would have never seen this.
Would you fail these solder balls?

It is a QFN, 0.5mm pitch, 0.3mm pad width with a heat slug.
I think trying to replace this device by hand would cause more trouble
than we see right now.

Genny
