This reminds me of my first visit to a lens manufacturing company.
Having been raised in the world of electronics soldering, the sight of
operators clearing off solder fountains with their bare fingers was
quite disturbing! 

That day I learnt about lens blocking alloys - low melting points in
about the 60degC area, based on bismuth I think. These "solders" are
used to hold lenses in place whilst machining, etc.
