And why is it so hard???

For the record Aluminium (OK Aluminum - occasionally I slip into real
English...8-) Oxide (anodizing) is actually the same chemical composition as
Sapphire... AL2 O3

Hi Victor,

See http://www.anodizing.org/Anodizing/definitions.html

An excerpt: «anodizing is an electrochemical process that thickens and
toughens the naturally occurring protective oxide. The resulting finish,
depending on the process, is the second hardest substance known to man,
second only to the diamond. The anodic coating is part of the metal, but has
a porous structure which allows secondary infusions, (i.e. organic and
inorganic coloring, lubricity aids, etc.)»

Oxides = no soldering; stainless steel = Fe = practically insoluble in Sn =
no soldering

Of course I assume you are talking about soldering in terms of electronics
and using SnPb or Sn based lead-free alloys.

Regards,

Ioan

Fellow TechNetters:

Is a Stainless Steel anodized surface solderable?

Victor,
