So throwing your weight around is one of your core competencies.

Possibly a bigger question is what copper weight do you need and do you
need to control your finished board thickness, inclusive of the copper
thickness, to maintain your mechanical stack up. This can be important
if you have an edge connector. If the board is too thick or too thin
you may have assembly or reliability issues with the connections.

We have recently changed our internal specification to call out the
finished plated thickness of the board not the core thickness. For
example we often use heavy copper weights, 4 or 6 ounce is not uncommon.
If I were to use a standard 0.059" core with 4 ounce copper on the outer
layers I would have exceeded my target finished board thickness of
0.062".

Subject: Re: [TN] Cost Implications of Non-standard Laminate Thickness

Gary,
Standard laminate thickness would depend on specific board shops and
what
the have in stock. With all the available core thickness' along with
various
pre-preg options there's really nothing that can't be achieved given a
little imagination. In the past I have pressed a 1 ply 106 preg for a
customer which pressed out at .0015. As far as cost adders I guess the
labor
involved to create a thickness that they do not have on hand would come
into
play. Here is an example of what we carry in FR-4 laminate. .003, .005,
.008, .010, .012, .014, .016, .018, .021, .028, .039, .047, .059, .093,
.125. Throw any variety of pregs between and as I stated use your
imagination. There are things to take into consideration. For example, if
you
want to maintain consistent dielectric thickness, using a core rather
than
preg will give you more consistent results. Hope this helps,
Dan S

Subject: [TN] Cost Implications of Non-standard Laminate Thickness

Good Friday to all,

I was asked by one of my design engineers:

What is considered as standard laminate thickness, if such exists, for
cores and layers?
What is the cost incurred when non-standard thickness are specified?

I usually bounce these questions off my PWB suppliers, but thought I
would broaden my input. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Gary
