Hi folks! Ok, here is the science: Gold dissolves into a Sn60Pb40 solder
bath 1 um (40 uinches) per second at 200C (W. Bader's data). So at 500F
(260C) you increase the dissolution rate to over 4um (160 uinches) per
second. Contrast those dynamics with these elements using a Sn60Pb40
solder bath : Palladium dissolves at 1 um per second at 400C: Nickel
dissolves at 1 um per second over 500C!

Re: [TN] De-golding?

Hi Dean,
No science--it just works.? Actually, any T above the Liquidus of solder
will work, higher T's will work faster.

Good question. We use 500 deg. F. because we run our wave solder at 500
deg. F. and because 500 degrees F. is what we have been tinning at for a
long, long time, at least since the late 60's. I have no idea whether
that is the optimum temperature for dynamic wave tinning or not. I do
know that at least 9 companies in the Minnesota area, three in North
Dakota, and two in South Dakota all tin their parts at 500 deg. F. also.
I'm sorry I cannot tell you the science behind that temperature.

Apologies if this has found its way through before, I got an error
sending message from TechNet.

What temperature do you use for your SnPb de-golding pots and what is
the reason for your particular choice?

CIA,
    Iain
