I don't believe there is a standard defining the flash gold process (am I wrong)?
We have standards for the other finishes. If the flash gold is as wonderful as Lee is stating, then it should be further evaluated and qualified and a standard written for it so it has a definition.

Agree,
Last year, we had an incident with 'helicopter' RF components. They literally jumped off the boards during tempcycling. The 'flash' gold was, believe it or not, it was up to 10 microns thick!! And next batch we got had a flash so thin and porous, that you could as well skip the flash. I'm always suspicious of flash gold.

I believe what is going on is that some unscrupulous suppliers are using their deep gold plating process to provide "flash gold" this will often result in a thick gold coating. Once again the OEM needs perform a due diligence inspection of the supplier and this should be followed by periodic

visits. This is expensive, but so defective circuits.

Best regards

Flash is not "flash"?

Hi Lee,
However, I have been involved in issues of Au-embrittlement as a
consequence
of the electrolytic flash gold being plated too thick.
