John, you spent a lot of money as a licence to pollute a landfill. No
value is gained from it. Yet it could have been cleanly (practically no
pollution) recycled. Recycled into what, you ask? Recycled into energy,
even the casing of your monitor (the tube and electronics would have
been removed for a different recycling chain. And it would have cost you
less, because the resultant energy could be sold and the landfill would
have shrunk to 10% of the volume. More and more, waste must be recycled
and not landfilled. Have a look at
http://www.cypenv.org/worldenv/files/tridel.htm to see how it can be done.

Let me cite the case of Toronto, as an example. Most of the household
garbage is trucked to a landfill. Nothing strange about that, you say.
Until I tell you that the landfill is half-way down the State of
Michigan to Wayne County. Tens of garbage trucks/day doing nearly 500 km
each in both directions (think exhausts), carrying 700,000 t of
rubbish/year across an international frontier. And how much do the City
of Toronto (or, rather, their taxpayers) pay the US landfill owners for
the privilege? Literally tens of millions, $35M, to be exact, not
counting the cost of the trucking and border controls. Yet that same
garbage could provide Toronto with 9% of the electricity it consumes, if
only the City fathers had a little nous.
