And typically, applying for an exemption to actually getting one (or more
likely not) will take about two years...................8-(

Article 5, Section 1b says it more clearly. The application is not
exempt until it is made exempt by amendment to the Annex.

Christine,
I believe there is wording in the directive to the effect that if a
suitable substitute is "technically or scientifically impracticable"
then the product is exempt.
I also believe you have to make your case and that particular
application would be subject to review in the future, based on
technological advancement. You would probably have to prove that
alternate methods, materials and design changes have been explored and
found unsuitable.

Regards,
LS

Subject: EU RoHS Exemption for Highly Specialized Components

Dear List Members,

Our OEM makes a Teflon and Tin film capacitor. The tin film is 7%
lead and there is no substitute metal that can be used in place of the
lead in this particular product.

Is there an exception to EU RoHS compliance for a Teflon and Tin film
capacitor since there is no substitute material? It will be used in
commercial equipment in the music industry and not sold to the typical
consumer.

  Thank you!

  Christine Rodham
