The more interesting question here is whether or not Richard's joke would have caused a stir if he had typed "lawyer" rather than "Democrat." If he had used an ethnic slur, I would agree with everyone stomping on him with both feet, but he didn't.
Classifying a remark as hate speech by substituting an ethnic group for the noun of the sentence shouldn't be the litmus test for hate speech. Example: "I live in New Hampshire and I just realized this year that I hate SNOW." Now substitute any ethnic group for SNOW. It is not the same sentence. Neither is a little political humor.
In this case, all we know is the candidate for whom Richard is most likely to vote in November.
