We have a waste disposal company that uses the 5 gallons of collected IPA water solution above 60 percent IPA to burn to make concrete.

As far as I know, clean alcohol is not classified a poison. If you pour some

gallons a year in the wast water, the alcohol will be mixed in proportions

1:trillions. Won't that be harmless? And DI is already water. I'm not

meaning to depreciate the laws, but sometimes I think we exaggerate things.

I had about half a litre of used acetone in a glass bottle in my lab. The

environmental inspection group made a raid one day and saw my bottle without

label. They ordered me to buy a special, explosion safe metal can, pour the

waste acetone in, and send the whole to an adress for destruction. If

not, they had the right to close my lab. I didn't argue with them, took the

bottle with the waste acetone to my home and found it useful for this and

that. Cheaper, faster, simpler. Am I a bad guy?

Phil,

We bottle it in used IPA bottles (with new WHMIS labels - Canadian

federal protocol for chemicals) and then we have it removed by a bona

fide waste hauler. Not sure what they do with this mixture, but for

just spent IPA/acetone/toluene (no water), it is burned for fuel.

Hey Technetters,

It just occurred to me that in using the alcohol/DI water mix for

determining the cleanliness of a circuit board, somewhere along the line

this becomes a waste fluid and needs to be disposed. What are your

disposal methods? I'm sure the local waste water folks would look

poorly on alcohol being added to the waste stream... unless it was

Johnny Walker Black or Stoli in their pockets.
