I attended the first one: great conference and small exhibition in the
Metropole hotel in Brighton. It was truly an international event with
delegates from the whole of Europe and simultaneous interpretation
to/from French and German, at least. I gave a paper on contamination and
solderability at the 2nd one in 1969. At one point in my discourse, I
talked about 'preservative coatings' and this raised giggles here and
there in the audience, numbering about 500. I immediately cottoned onto
why: the French translator used the term 'couches préservatives'.
Unfortunately, in French, the term 'préservati-f, -ve' is used only
medically as a means of preventing disease and the noun is a condom. The
mind boggles visualising a printed circuit inside a contraceptive to
maintain its solderability. Coming to think of it, why not? :-)
