Helena,

A very good question indeed.

If a company chooses to use production panels in lieu of coupons (as allowed
per the identified paragraph) to perform structural integrity you would
indeed have to collect enough samples to satisfy the sample plan 0.1 for
Class 3.

This may mean you collect a sample from each panel in a production lot. And
hope you are running more than 1 board per panel as if you use that one per
panel production board to satisfy that requirement you may be left with
nothing to ship.

In other words, consider using coupons whenever possible, this is my
opinion, this is my position.

Franklin

Subject: [TN] 6012B "Production Panels" vs "Coupons"

Hello TechNetters,

Here is my dilemma: Because of an issue we are having with one of our
board houses, I was reading the IPC-6012B. I found many references in
the spec that states a "production panel" may be used in lieu of the
"coupons"... (i.e. see para 3.6 Structural Integrity beginning on the
bottom of page 13 and continued on page 14).

What I can not find in the 6012 is how many "production panels" are to
be used. Does it imply you have to use the requirement per Table 4-3
Acceptance Testing and Frequency Sample Index for Annular ring
(internal) to be 0.1 per Class 3? Per this index number, per Table 4-2
requires 125 samples per 151-280 boards as we had 184 boards built?

How would you interpret this?

Thank you.
