Another approach is to purchase a used machine from one of the used
equipment "distributors" with a written agreement that if anything is
wrong with it or if anything is missing they will pay to have it
fixed/added by the machine vendor. Of course, you need to this with the
machine vendor also. Many of the machine vendors are happy to bring the
machine in and go over it and fix anything broken or missing.
For example, I recently bought a 2005 Airvac DRS 24 Rework station and
had it dropshipped directly to Airvac. Airvac then went over the entire
rework station and re-calibrated it, installed the software package,
etc., and added a calibration nozzle and a few other missing items. It
cost me a couple grand, but I then received a like-new rework station
back from Airvac with new software and a warranty. The total package
with freight was less than half the price of a new machine.

Hi Blair!

When it comes to SMT equipment I agree with Richard, go to the
manufacturer, unless you have someone you can really trust. I've bought
used equipment before and have been lucky. The machines that I have
bought used on the open market were auto-insertion machines, wave solder
machines, and I have bought SMT printers. Fortunately, I had pretty good
luck with everything. I've never bought any used pick and place
machines.

One thing that you need to think about, and plan for if you do find a
decent machine on the open market is support. Over the recent years if
you want to get any support from the OEM, don't be surprised if they ask
you for a "registration fee" before they will give any support at all. I
had to pay fees to both the printer OEM and wave solder OEM before I
could get any support at all from them. One was a one-time fee of $5000
per machine, the other was a $4500 per year fee.

First to the vendor. They often receive new units that were used
temporarily by the customer until a preferred model was available, or
were needed to demo the product at a trade show, or whatever. They
typically provide a new warranty and much better pricing, just because
it is a demo.
Also, they know you are going to buy one if you ask. They will quite
often drop the price considerably in order to sell you a machine on
their books. Use it as leverage.
Next, look at www.Equipmatching.com, as that is simply a central point
for all of the used machine suppliers, private owners who want to sell,
etc. Even the vendors sell their equipment there.

Then look at http://www.easiky.com/.

Then look at all of the rest.

I've got a pretty general question for Technetters out there - where
would you go if you were looking to buy used SMT equipment?

Thanks,

Blair
