I spent 20 years of my life between the ages of 18 and 20 as a telephone
lineman in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Nobody has to tell me how cold it
was. By the time I was done my skin was tougher than leather. I can tell
you so many stories.....

Now Genny, we mustn't exaggerate. It is only -23.5C most of the time and
we get 7 hours every other Wednesday.

Seriously most of southern Ontario is at the same latitude as southern
Oregon/northern California and although it is not as warm as those
states, it is certainly comparable to a lot of the New England, Mid
Atlantic and Midwestern lake states.

However, I lived two years in Edmonton, Alberta (1980-82, the most
northernly, large city (>1M) in North America) and in the winter of
81-82 we had six weeks when the highest it got was -25C and it was -45C
at night (excluding wind chill). On top of that this post doc had no
car, my wife and I had two little kids and there was a bus strike at the
same time. Getting groceries was "interesting". Oh, and the sun came up
after 9 AM and set by about 4 PM. Yuck. I did like the sunny, open
skies and the stuff you hear about a dry cold compared to -4C in Seattle
or Vancouver, British Columbia is actually true.

!!! Shhhhh don't give away our secrets.
How else do you think we deal with months of -25C or colder weather and
only 6 hours of sunlight a day...
